Wednesday from Stephanie

We got up this morning and rode a bus for 5 hours north to Somoto. We met the families who are receiving new houses and had a walking tour of the area where we will be working. The people are excited to have us here and everyone is very friendly. We are headed out for some ice cream bars (eskimo)and back to the hotel for the night. Thanks for all your prayers, we´ll try to add more tomorrow.

D. Anne Martin - Back in Managua

Hey Everybody,

We are back at the Project HOPE base in Managua. We have spent the past 5 days in Somoto which is about 4 or 5 hours drive away. The community we worked in was awesome. At first I was trying to compare it to the place we worked last year but I realized that was impossible. Both communities are special in their own ways. I have had a great week but I am definantly not ready to leave. I'm so happy to be staying another week. I've met so many cool people. I've enjoyed making relationships with the people in Somoto as well as on our team and becoming closer to people I already knew. It is really humbling that the houses we build, which seem like nothing to us, blesses these people so much. I LOVE NICARAGUA!

Pastor Jeremy - Somoto, Nicaragua

Hello Peninsula Grace,

First, my appologies for not blogging sooner. In Managua, the Project HOPE base is well equipped to stay connected with the outside world. However, in Somoto, we must visit a local phone & internet hub in order to connect to you all. At times, this local hub is packed with locals or the connection is poor. Regardless, I am connected now!

To report on the building projects, they are going well. I have become quite efficient in laying brick and to be honest, I quite enjoy it. It has been hot, but not terrible. There is always a nice breeze in this area of Nicaragua, which makes the work a bit more enjoyable. To comment on the houses, I feel that we achieved quite a lot, considering our group size. This being said, don`t worry - we left the Peninsula Grace group lots to do!

As for my specific role in Somoto, I spent two of the days, helping Marvin (Project HOPE Staff Member) run a soccer program for the street-youth and it went incredible! In the end, we had to run two tournaments, in two seperate barrios because the youth in these two areas do not mix. Gang territories among the street youth are very prevelent and could cause problems within the tournament.

Within the two days, we facilitated two tournaments in the two seperate barrios. It was amazing! We were able to share the gospel to each group before and after the tournaments. As well, building relationships with many young people during the games. Out of our ministry this week, a couple community leaders will be starting a league to connect the barrios and unite the city of Somoto - all under the Biblical principles of loving God and loving your neighbor...even your enemies!

I think that is all I have to report. I will try to attach some photos, once we get back to Managua tomorrow. Thank you for your prayers and I`ll see you all soon enough!

Estrella

Estrella before surgery.

Estrella after surgery.

We met Estrella in Oro Verde in March '08. Several of the girls on our team had a real burden to help Estrella get the eye surgery that she needed. We were able to raise almost twice the amount of money that was needed and Estrella was able to have her surgery! Praise God!

We're Home

The postings kind of dropped off at the end of the trip, but we are home safe and sound now. The last couple of days in Nicaragua were busy and people were too tired at the end of the day to write.

The last day we had a carnival with a clown, a pinata and lots of games and candy. The kids had a great time, but I think the adults might have enjoyed it almost as much as the kids.

Thank you for praying and for checking out our blog. We will keep it open for a while and post updates and possibly some more pictures.

Medical Update

The pace of the medical clinic has been incredible. We have seen 900 people in the few days that we have been down here. Yesterday 4 providers saw 330 people over the entire day and today - only a half day with 3 providers we saw 100.

Some of the common problems seen here are athletes feet, urinary tract infections due to the lack of water being consumed, asthma, hypertension, scabies and general cold symptoms. Some of the people have been so incredibly ill, but dont complain. They express the concerns in a matter of fact manner. The love of the mothers/grandmas towards the the little ones has also been incredible to see.

We quickly ran out of vitamins which people were asking for because of anemia. The solution was to tell them to eat more fresh fruit - melons, mango's etc as well as spinach - most of which they all have access to. When it was explained that these foods were high in vitamins they seemed surprised but grateful for such simple yet practical knowledge.

The experience with dealing with so many people over so short of time has definitely made me appreciate the "Great Physician" even more and am grateful the the times of prayer with some of the people.
